Free Crochet Pattern: Mini Yarn Skein Plushie

Earlier this year, I was shopping at Joann Fabrics (RIP) and found this adorable yarn skein plushie keychain. Being a crafty girl, I looked at it and thought “I could make this myself”. So, here we are. Enjoy this free crochet pattern!

Pattern Notes

Gauge does not matter for this pattern. This can be made with any yarn. The thicker the yarn, the bigger the plush! Use a hook that is at least 1mm smaller than the recommended hook on your yarn, so that the filling does not show

Stitch abbreviations

Sc: single crochet
Inc: 2 sc into one stitch
Dec: Insert hook into front loop of stitch and the front loop of the next stitch. Yo and pull up a loop through the first 2 loops on your hook. Yo and pull through final 2 loops to finish the sc.

Materials

One plush yarn (shown here as purple) and appropriately sized hook
One worsted weight yarn (shown here as white) and appropriately sized hook

Label
Chain the amount of chains you need to wrap around the center of the middle section of the yarn skein. For me this was 20 chains. More is better so that you don’t have to stretch the label when sewing later.
With worsted weight yarn, chain 21.
R1: Sc into the second chain from the hook. Sc remainder of row. Turn.
R2: Ch 1. Sc into each stitch in the row.
R3-R7: Repeat R2.
Note: If you want a wider label, keep crocheting rows until desired width.
Tie off, leaving tail for sewing.
Secure safety eyes two rows in from each edge, aligned.

Embroider a mouth
Thread needle with 4 to 5 inches of embroidery floss. Lining up with the inner side of the right eye, bring the needle from the inside of the label to the outside just below the safety eye. Bring the floss to the left and insert the needle below the left safety eye, lining up with the inner part of the eye and the where you first pulled the floss through the piece. Hold the floss in a curve for the smile and bring the needle through the piece again to secure the curve. Insert the needle under the curve, close to where the needle came through in the center. Pull the thread through and make a knot on the back side of the label. Trim ends so that they don’t stick out past the ends of the label. Wrap label around yarn skein, face outward. Sew ends together. Tie off and weave in ends.
